The Environmental Solutions Group within the Energy, Environment and Material Sciences Global Business specializes in solving difficult problems in the remediation of groundwater and sediment, including innovative approaches to understanding the fate and transport of contaminants. Battelle is currently seeking an Environmental Geochemist for the group. This position is located in Columbus, Ohio.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Preparation of technical documents such as work plans, sampling and analysis plans, and final reports.
  • Support laboratory research and field demonstrations with minimal supervision and within time and budget expectations.
  • Develop a research and development program in the area of environmental geochemistry using internal and external funds.
  • Maintain formal and informal communication and relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Train and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals to government and industrial clients.
The following Requirements must be met to be considered for this position:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or Environmental Chemistry. Minimum of 6 years experience or a Masters Degree in Civil, or Environmental Engineering or Environmental Chemistry and a minimum of three years experience.
  • Strong background in environmental geochemistry, including geochemical modeling.
  • Good understanding of redox changes on contaminants in the environment, chemistry of minerals, speciation and remediation of metals.
  • Experience working on remediation projects, analyzing and interpreting data and writing various reports including groundwater monitoring, site assessment reports and evaluation of remedial concepts.
  • Experience conducting or overseeing bench scale laboratory sampling and field sampling and implementation of remediation technologies.
  • Excellent communication, writing, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Experience with DoD (e.g., Air Force, Navy, and USACE), DOE, EPA, and/or industrial remediation projects.
The following is desired, but not required to be considered for this position:
  • Ph.D. in Civil or Environmental Engineering or Environmental Chemistry.
  • 40 hour HAZWOPPER Training.
  • Experience writing proposals for government and industrial clients.

Primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assisting in characterizing and remediating contaminated sites
- Participating in evaluating and implementing environmental technologies
- Conducting data collection, entry, and interpretation
- Following established protocols, record keeping, and analysis
- Performing web searches, database searches, and literature reviews to support research activities

Qualifications and Requirements:
- Students currently pursuing a BS in environmental, chemical, or civil engineering, geology, hydrology, or an environmental science with at least two years of undergraduate coursework completed.
- Minimum GPA 3.0
- Careful attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong quantitative and analytic skills
- Excellent communication (oral and written) skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and the Windows operating system
- Ability to work independently; as well as part of a team

Park Naturalist Position

The Board of Greene County Commissioners is seeking an Intermittent Naturalist in
the Recreation, Parks & Cultural Arts Department. This is an On-Call position,
consisting of 1,000 hours or less, per calendar year, and the incumbent must be
available to work daytime, evening and weekend hours.
The successful candidate will research, assemble curriculum, and instruct cultural and
environmental programs for the general public, schools and summer camp;
coordinate volunteer naturalists; schedule programs; conduct volunteer staff
meetings; and assist with large event programming. Responsible for the health,
safety & care of native wildlife held at the nature center; daily cleaning &
maintenance of the facility; and providing information to the general public through
trail guides and other educational information.
Training & experience minimum requirements: Associates Degree or technical
program in Environmental Education/Science, Resource Management, or closely
related field and two (2) years experience presenting environmental education
programs; or, any combination of education & experience sufficient to successfully
perform the essential duties of the position. A valid Ohio’s driver’s license is
required.
