Undergraduate or graduate level college students attending Maryland schools or Maryland residents attending out-of-state schools are eligible to apply.
During the ten-week paid summer program, the intern will process and accession the ceremonial gift collections presented to the Maryland Office of the Secretary of State. The gift collections consist of a variety of media, including ceramics, glass, textiles, furniture and paper, from numerous international sources. During this internship, the intern will develop an understanding of museum registration, and learn proper techniques and protocol for handling and storing a variety of objects and materials. The intern will assist in a variety of collection management tasks that include object numbering, cataloging works of art, and database processing. Additional
research tasks may also be assigned as needed. Attention to detail and basic computer skills are required; graduate- level experience in history, museum studies and material cultural is preferred. Some assignments may require regular off-site work.
Hourly rates are based on education level: undergraduate at $10.63 per hour, and graduate at $11.25 per hour.

The Research & Exhibit Intern will work with Stratford Hall staff to research, write text and select images for a War of 1812 exhibit on Stratford Hall's website. The exhibit will focus on the Lee family's participation in, and connections to, the war and the war's impact on the Northern Neck of Virginia where Stratford is located. Applicants should have excellent research and writing skills and the ability to work independently. Basic knowledge of webpage construction preferred, but not required.
Applicants should be enrolled in a BA or MA program majoring in History, Public History, American Studies, or a related field.

The Collections Management Intern will assist the Collections Manager with multiple projects. Hands-on historical restoration/preservation training and/or experience preferred. This training or experience should include the following areas: masonry, painting, carpentry and plaster.

How to Apply: Interns will work full-time for 10 weeks with specific dates negotiable depending upon the applicant's schedule. All internships include a $1,000 stipend and free on-site housing with kitchen and laundry facilities. Due to Stratford's relatively remote location, personal vehicles are recommended but not required.

The Columbus Foundation’s Summer Fellowship program places a limited number of students with Franklin County nonprofit organizations for a period of 10 weeks. A stipend is paid to Fellows through the nonprofit’s payroll system. Students selected to be Fellows during one year are prohibited from applying the following years.

Summer Museum Internships in Maine
The General Henry Knox Museum, an historic house museum in beautiful midcoast Maine, is pleased to post two paid internships for the summer of 2012. The museum, a recreation of the 1794 mansion built by the country’s first Secretary of War, houses an important collection of Federal. Period furniture and decorative arts, as well as primary and secondary resources related to the economic development and settling of midcoast Maine. The museum has a permanent staff of 3.5 FT employees and over fifty active volunteers, and offers a very active range of programs, classes and events during the summer.

For both internships, undergraduate or graduate students with a background or strong interest in history, historic preservation, education, marketing, library and archival science or museum studies are encouraged to apply. A high level of self-motivation and initiative is required. Saturdays and some special evening and weekend events are required. Starting and ending dates are flexible.

Programming Interns
To be considered for this opportunity, you should be pursuing a Computer Science or MIS degree and have successfully completed several programming classes. Prior hands-on internship experience in a corporate environment is a plus.
Quality Assurance Interns
To be considered for this opportunity, you should be pursuing a Computer Science, Information Technology degree or a Business degree with a focus in technology.
Exposure in accounting, human resources or finance is a plus. This person should be detail-oriented, analytical and thorough with good written and communication skills. You must be fluent in all aspects of MS Office and have experience with web/intranet creation tools.
Technical Writer/Documentation Interns
To be considered for this opportunity, you should be pursuing a Technical Communication, Professional Writing, or a degree in a related field. You should be comfortable working with computers (word processing, graphics, and desktop publishing software), have successfully completed several technical writing classes and at least one computer programming class (any programming language). This internship is not a fit for a student who mainly enjoys creative writing (such as poetry or fiction), journalism, or types of technical writing other than software documentation (such as proposal writing or medical/scientific writing).
Prior hands-on or internship experience in a corporate environment and development experience is a plus. Students must be able to work full time from Monday, May 21 to Friday, August 17, 2012 at our headquarters office in Fairfax, Virginia.

Summer Museum Internship in Iowa
Summer Internship, Curatorial Department
Title: Curatorial Intern
Number of positions: 2
Compensation: Unpaid; No housing provided.
Time Commitment: 200-350 Hours (10 weeks, 20 hrs per week minimum), between June 1- August 17, Monday-Friday, 9:00-3:00
Duties/Responsibilities/Projects:
The museum internship program at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library – Museum offers real world museum experience to students interested in pursuing a career within the field. The internship is restricted to upper level undergraduate and graduate students. We assign a variety of collections and exhibits related projects to our interns. Within the sphere of collections, interns work on a variety of tasks, such as data-entry, cataloging, assessing storage conditions, cleaning, inventorying and condition reporting; geared to impart knowledge on proper collections management practices. Our interns also spend some time on exhibit related projects, such as exhibit installation, label writing, mount-making, lighting, environmental monitoring,
and assisting with artifact loans.
Summer interns are encouraged to participate in Hoover's Hometown Days August 3-4, 2012.
Supervision: Melanie Stimmel, Assistant Curator (Marcus Eckhardt, Curator and Jennifer
Pedersen, Registrar)
Qualifications:
· Interest in working with museum collections.
· Intern should be detail oriented, organized, and able to work independently.
· Must be able to work as a team and accept constructive criticism.
· Must be able to climb stairs and ladders.
· Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
· Average or above average level of computer literacy (Skills in Photoshop, Illustrator,
Word, Excel, Access, and a collection database would be an advantage but is not
required).
· Must be eager to learn and ask questions.
Note: Dress code is business casual to smart casual.
· Intern is responsible for own transportation and housing.

Education interns will be responsible for facilitating programming and giving oral presentations for the summer Adventures in Learning series, which explores various aspects of the collection through tours and hands-on workshops. Interns will lead pre-structured hands-on workshops and will be responsible for creating a new program. Additionally, each intern will be responsible for delivering at least 2 oral presentations as well as highlights tours of the collection. Interns will assist the front-line staff with visitor orientation and participate in weekly readings and discussions. Interns are required to attend a reception on June 30, 2012.

Qualifications:
Seeking undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in museum education. Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills, public speaking experience, and demonstrated experience working with the public. Must be a self-starter with high standards and exemplary problem solving skills. History, art, and museum studies majors are encouraged to apply. Special preference will be given to UMKC students who have completed English 309WI: Rhetorics of Public Memory.
