The Ohio Historical Society is seeking a full-time Assistant Registrar of Collections in its Museum & Library Services Division.
This position assists in maintaining records associated with the Society's museum and non-public records collections and other collections-related activities. Examples of responsibilities include:
· Participating in updating the automated collection catalog, monitoring object locations, and
loans to and from collections.
· Assisting with record-keeping systems and procedures that promote identification and management of collections.
· Performing inventories of Society's collections, including regular audits.
· Assisting with loan negotiations, condition reporting, packing, shipping and insurance.
· Working with staff to facilitate collection-related activities, including exhibits, educational programs and development.
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in museum studies or a related subject or the equivalent in work experience plus minimum one-year experience in museum registration. Thorough knowledge of registration methods and policies, as well as current museum collection management and handling practices, knowledge of and experience with automated collection records systems and collections conservation, intermediate mathematical skills, computer skills, and experience in database development are desired.

and Texas Parks and Wildlife philosophy concerning historical, natural and cultural resources. The Great Lakes Naval Museum internship program allows for interns with numerous interests, strengths, and goals to gain practical, hands-on museum experience at the United States Navy's newest museum. As an official Department of the Navy Museum under the Naval History and Heritage Command, the Great Lakes Naval Museum's mission is to select, collect, preserve, and interpret the history of the United States Navy with particular emphasis on the Enlisted Sailor and the Navy's only "boot camp" at the Naval Station Great Lakes in Great Lakes, Illinois.

Museum Summer Internships in Rural Virginia
Stratford Hall is pleased to offer paid residential internships for the summer of 2012:
Education Intern
The Education Intern will assist the Director of Interpretation & Education with multiple projects. These potential projects include: Boy and Girl Scout Patch Program, 4-H Outreach, Homeschool Education Programs, High School Educational Visit Curriculum, and Overnight Educational Programs.
Applicants should be enrolled in a BA or BS program majoring in History, American Studies, Museum Studies, Education or a related field. Experience working with the public, schools, or above organizations a plus.
Research & Exhibit Intern
The Research & Exhibit Intern will work with Stratford Hall staff to research, write text and select images for a War of 1812 exhibit on Stratford Hall's website. The exhibit will focus on the Lee family's participation in, and connections to, the war and the war's impact on the Northern Neck of Virginia where Stratford is located. Applicants should have excellent research and writing skills and the ability to work independently. Basic knowledge of webpage construction preferred, but not required.
Applicants should be enrolled in a BA or MA program majoring in History, Public History, American Studies, or a related field.
Collections Management Intern
The Collections Management Intern will assist the Collections Manager with multiple projects. These projects include inventory, researching and re-housing objects, taking digital images, and preparing and updating artifact records in the Rediscovery database. Coursework or experience in collections care and management, experience with digital imaging, and familiarity with database systems is a plus.
Applicants should be enrolled in a BA or BS program majoring in Art History, American Studies, or a related field with an expressed interest in pursuing either further study at the graduate level or a career in museums.
Building Preservation/Restoration Intern
The Preservation Department of Stratford Hall is seeking a qualified summer intern to participate in its fourth annual Preservation Field School. Field School participants will assist in the day to day operations of the Preservation Department and will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with a variety of preservation projects, centered on the execution of a Cyclical Maintenance plan. Tasks could include plaster repair, repointing, painting and window and door repair. The intern's work will focus on the cyclical maintenance of the Great House Windows.
Applicants should be working towards a degree in the Historic Preservation Field and have knowledge of 18th Century building materials and techniques. Hands-on historical restoration/preservation training and/or experience preferred. This training or experience should include the following areas: masonry, painting, carpentry and plaster.

Overview
The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, will be offering paid internships to be held for ten weeks, from May 21– July 27, 2012. The Ringling is part of Florida State University and serves as the State Art Museum of Florida. Located on a 66-acre site overlooking Sarasota Bay, it consists of an art museum, circus museum, historic home, theater and research library. The internships are in the following departments:
Collections Management
Summer internships at the Ringling combine practical, hands-on experience working on a project for a specific department with exposure to all aspects of the museum’s operation.
Interns earn $11.25 per hour (less taxes) and are paid bi-weekly. Interns are responsible for their own housing (the Museum will assist with locating nearby rentals).
Candidates must be graduating seniors or current graduate students. International students must have a current US Visa and be eligible to work in the US. The positions require fingerprinting. Specific projects related to the Museum’s collections will be developed in consultation with the Museum’s staff, and special interests of the intern will be taken into account. The intern will be trained to give tours and assist in other Museum operations as needed. The Curatorial Intern will work 5 days a week (30 hours) for 20 weeks, and will be paid a stipend of $6,600.
Marketing Intern: This internship is also designed to offer a broad range of experience in museum operations, including program and exhibition development, interpretation, research, and public relations. Specific projects related to the Museum’s marketing initiatives will be developed in consultation with the Museum’s staff and the Museum’s marketing committee. The intern will be trained to give tours and assist in other Museum operations as needed. The Marketing Intern will work 5 days a week (30 hours) for 11 weeks, and will be paid a stipend of $2,900.

Duties/Responsibilities/Projects:
The museum internship program at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library – Museum offers real world museum experience to students interested in pursuing a career within the field. The internship is restricted to upper level undergraduate and graduate students. We assign a variety of collections and exhibits related projects to our interns. Within the sphere of collections, interns work on a variety of tasks, such as data-entry, cataloging, assessing storage conditions, cleaning, inventorying and condition reporting; geared to impart knowledge on proper collections management practices. Our interns also spend some time on exhibit related projects, such as exhibit installation, label writing, mount-making, lighting, environmental monitoring,
and assisting with artifact loans.

Museum Internship in Alaska
The Hammer Museum in Haines Alaska is recruiting for a 3-month internship with a flexible start day from May to September 2012
The Hammer Museum is a non-profit, private entity and the world's only museum dedicated to hammers. Its mission is to provide a view of the past and a history of technology through the use of man's first tool. There are over 1500 hammers on display, ranging from Roman times to the present.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Interns may work on one or more of the following projects: cataloging and researching the museum collection, taking digital photographs of artifacts; website development; assisting with an inventory of the museum collection on a Past Perfect database; public speaking, and newsletter development.

Museum Educational Assistant in Maine

The General Henry Knox Museum, a seasonal historic house museum in beautiful midcoast Maine, seeks a part-time education assistant. The museum, a reconstruction of the 1794 mansion built by the country’s first Secretary of War, houses an important collection of Federal Period furniture and decorative arts, as well as primary and secondary resources related to the economic development and settling of midcoast Maine. The museum has a permanent staff of 3.5 employees and over sixty active volunteers, and offers a very active range of programs, classes and events during the summer and works with schools and researchers year-round. Reporting to the Executive Director, the education assistant will work with the museum’s educational programming and outreach, library and database development, and with assisting researchers. One primary responsibility will be to provide support for the museum’s summer teacher institute, including doing outreach, answering phones, preparing mailings, handling teachers’ logistical concerns, assisting teachers with research projects, and assisting with program delivery. The education assistant will also be responsible for the implementation and outreach for school programs and tours, including the roll out of a major revision to the museum’s Knox Box program. In addition, the education assistant will help maintain the museum’s research library and oversee volunteers working on a database of Knox manuscript collections. The education assistant will also be expected to be able to give tours and assist in other museum operations as needed.
Applicants must have a bachelors degree with a demonstrated background or strong interest in history, education, library and archival science, museum studies or other related field. A high level of self-motivation, initiative, and organization is required. Experience with PastPerfect, Revolutionary or midcoast Maine history, or current educational practices are all pluses. The position is normally 3 days a week (24 hours), with occasional extra hours for special programs (including some evenings and weekends), particularly in the summer months. Due to the sometimes physical nature of the position, candidates must be comfortable climbing stairs and be able to lift boxes of documents.

Dumbarton House Intership
Dumbarton House, a Federal period historic house Museum in Georgetown, seeks a War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration Intern to support the museum's planning for and participation in region-wide War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemorations. Dumbarton House, headquarters of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America, offers visitors an opportunity to enhance their appreciation of early American history. On August 24, 1814, Dumbarton House's third long-term owner, Charles Carroll, escorted First Lady Dolley Madison from the advancing British Army during the Burning of Washington. Dumbarton House, then called Belle Vue, served as her first site of refuge. The year 2014 is designated as the culmination of commemorative activities in the Washington, DC area. The Bicentennial Commemoration Intern works directly with and reports to the Executive Director.
Academic credit may be arranged in cooperation with a sponsoring college or university. A stipend may be available.

Responsibilities
Specific projects will be identified at start of internship based on intern interest and background, and highest staff priorities. Specific duties may include:
- Research: Collate existing Dumbarton House research and resources related to the War of 1812; create summary documents.
- Exhibition: Support research and planning for War of 1812 temporary exhibition; research objects for inclusion; draft wall text; outline and create supplemental materials; identify marketing avenues and draft press releases.
- Group Tours: identify groups with interest in 1812 subject; develop plan for targeted marketing to drive group tour attendance; develop joint tour offerings with other area 1812 sites and/or community sites (restaurants, hotels, retail shops).
- Interpretation: research and create enhanced 1812 interpretive offerings.
- Public & Youth Programming: research and develop public program plan to tie existing programs to 1812 theme.
- Attend training sessions and ongoing program meetings (both internal and external) as scheduled; and
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Excellent research, written, and oral communication skills;
- Knowledge of early American history, architecture, and/or decorative arts;
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- Flexibility, enthusiasm, and a sincere and genuine interest in people of all ages, preservation, and American history;
- Experience with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, and Publisher), knowledge of databases and office equipment; and
- Strength, dexterity, and mobility to perform all duties.

2012 Spring Internships at Fraunces Tavern® Museum, New York, NY

Fraunces Tavern® Museum’s mission is to educate the public and encourage the exploration of American Colonial, Revolutionary War, Early Republic and Early New York City history. It was founded in 1907 by Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York, Inc. Housed in historic Fraunces Tavern, the permanent collection focuses on 18th and 19th century buildings, period rooms, prints, paintings, sculpture decorative arts, rare books and documents relating to or reflecting aspects of early American culture and history. Also included in the collection are items associated with the history of the Sons of the Revolution of the State of New York.
In order to better serve its public and fulfill this mission, the museum has recently re-housed its collection. Now that the Museum’s historical objects are in proper storage a complete inventory of the collection must be completed. Reporting to the Curator, intern will:
- Identify and verify the location of objects
- Create and organize object documentation – both manual and digital (includes object research)
- Write condition reports
- Stabilize objects in preparation for storage and conservation
- Assist in exhibition preparation and mounting
The internship will start in January 2012 and is unpaid.
Qualifications: Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate studies (history, politics, English, or similar) or graduate studies (museum studies, public history, education, American History or similar), or have completed either/or. Intern should be detail oriented, organized, and able to work independently. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders. Gaston County Museum: 2012 Spring Internships

The Gaston County Museum is currently seeking 2 interns for Spring 2012; one Curatorial and one Archival. In addition, both interns will assist the Curatorial Staff in exhibit design/installation as well as collections management. The interns will also work under the guidance of the Curatorial Staff to update and maintain permanent exhibits and interpreted spaces.
The successful candidates will be detail oriented, organized, and able to work independently. Must be able to work with and meet deadlines, lift up to 30 pounds, and climb stairs and ladders. Preference will be given to candidates with previous museum work or course experience and/or candidates wishing to pursue a career in museums. Knowledge of PastPerfect collections database a plus.
The internships are unpaid, but housing that is within walking distance to the museum is provided. Both internships will begin in January, 2012 and be 30 to 40 hours per week during that time. Deadline for application is November 18th, 2011.
