Paid Summer Museum Internship

Montpelier, the General Henry Knox Museum, an historic house museum in beautiful midcoast Maine, is reopening its search for an education intern for the summer of 2011, a position that will transition into a temporary employee for up to twelve weeks in the fall. The museum, a reconstruction of the 1794 mansion built by the country’s first Secretary of War, houses an important collection of Federal Period furniture and decorative arts, as well as primary and secondary resources related to the economic development and settling of midcoast Maine. The museum has a permanent staff of four FT employees and over sixty active volunteers, and offers a very active range of programs, classes and events during the summer. The education internship is part of the museum’s Center for the Study of Early American History, and will provide a focused experience in museum educational programming, research, and library development. One of the educational intern’s primary responsibilities will be to provide support for the Center’s summer teacher institute, including answering phones, preparing mailings, handling teachers’ logistical concerns, assisting teachers with research projects, and assisting with program delivery, working with noted experts in the field of history. Another primary responsibility will be working with the education coordinator on developing the Museum’s research library and improving intellectual access to two major Knox manuscript collections. The intern will also be trained to give tours and assist in other Museum operations as needed. A very high level of organization, motivation and energy is required. This internship is 5 days a week (35 hours) for 12 weeks, and pays a stipend of $4,000.

The education internship will also serve as training for a temporary position of up to twelve weeks in the fall, covering for the education coordinator. In this role the candidate will be responsible for the implementation of school programs and tours, including the roll out of a major revision to the Museum’s Knox Box program, managing the final logistics of the 2011 summer teacher institute, assisting in the planning for 2012 programming, and continuing work in the research library, overseeing volunteers.

Recent undergraduate or graduate students with a background or strong interest in history, education, library and archival science or museum studies are encouraged to apply. A high level of self-motivation and initiative is required. Some Saturdays and special evening and weekend events are required, particularly in the summer months. Starting date must be by June 15. We regret that the museum can not provide housing.

Newseum Summer Collections Internship – Washington, DC

Are you looking for an exciting internship that will provide you with the skills necessary to help you obtain full-time museum employment? If so, the Newseum’s Collections Internship is for you!

The Newseum, a revolutionary 250,000-square-foot museum of news, offers visitors an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits. At the Newseum, we pride ourselves on creating up-to-the minute exhibits and actively collecting modern and historic artifacts. As a Newseum intern you can work at our museum downtown or our state-of-the-art storage center in Laurel, Maryland (or both). Internship hours are flexible and can be arranged to fit individual’s schedules - this can include morning and weekend work. You will be a member of the small, dynamic Collections team and will be able to make an enormous contribution to the work we do. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain Collections experience and be involved in the day-to-day operations of one of Washington, D.C.’s most popular museums!

Intern responsibilities will include, but are not limited to assisting Registrars and Collections Specialists with the following tasks:

- Daily monitoring and recording of environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity, lighting, etc.) in gallery spaces

- Processing donations and incoming loans, including cataloging artifacts in database

- Monitoring and reporting on exhibition conditions as they pertain to exhibited collections

- Assisting with the cleaning of exhibits and artifacts on display pre-opening

- Aiding in the installation and de-installation of exhibited artifacts

- Compiling information for the new Standard Facilities Report particularly regarding the environmental conditions/calculations for each of the galleries

- Helping with basic artifact conservation

- If time and interest permits, short-term, independent research projects related to the collection can be designed

Newspaper archives internship project

- For those who already possess or would like to gain archival experience, there is the opportunity to work on a self-directed archival project with the Newseum’s outstanding 35,000 piece newspaper collection (this project will take place at the Newseum’s storage facility in Laurel, MD)

Experience/Skills

Candidates should be currently enrolled in or should have recently finished a museum-related graduate or undergraduate program, possess basic computer skills, an interest in collections/registration work, and the ability to lift 30 pounds.

Timing/Duration/Pay

Internships last for a minimum of 12 weeks and may be part or full time. This internship position is for college credit only.

Visitor Services and Volunteer Manager, Providence Children’s Museum

Visitor Services and Volunteer Manager

Providence Children’s Museum is Rhode Island’s only museum especially for children, their parents and other care providers. Its mission is to inspire learning through active play and exploration. The Museum opened to the public in 1977 and serves 165,000 visitors a year. The Visitor Services and Volunteer Manager is primarily responsible for ensuring the quality of the visitor experience at the Museum. This full-time person supervises a team of five visitor Experience Coordinators, the Housekeeper and an AmeriCorps member; oversees the work of 30 - 50 volunteer and work-study student Play Guides and Admissions Staff; coordinates all volunteers who work in the Museum; and participates as a member of the education department and exhibits team in developing policies, procedures and plans for Museum exhibits and programs.

Qualifications include:

Dynamic team leader with strong communication skills. Reliable, flexible, detail oriented, able to multi-task. At least two years experience in a supervisory position and bachelor’s level degree or equivalent experience. Experience working with children and a passion for children’s playful learning. Excellent customer service skills. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

Two Internships at Knox Museum

The museum, a reconstruction of the 1794 mansion built by the country’s first Secretary of War, houses an important collection of Federal Period furniture and decorative arts, as well as primary and secondary resources related to the economic development and settling of midcoast Maine. The museum has a permanent staff of four FT employees and over sixty active volunteers, and offers a very active range of programs, classes and events during the summer. Museum Intern: This internship is designed to offer a broad range of experience in museum operations, including collections management, interpretation, research, and program and exhibition development. Specific projects for each intern will be developed in consultation with the museum’s staff, and special interests of the intern will be taken into account. Two Museum Interns will be hired for eleven weeks: one for four days a week (26 hours) at a stipend of $2,300; one for three days a week (19.5 hours) at a stipend of $1,700.
