Ouachita Crew (5 positions):
Duration: May 9th - August 19th, 2011 (start/end dates may be negotiable)
Primary duties: measure stream habitat attributes and sample fish in wadeable streams
Duty station: Mt. Ida, Arkansas
Housing: Forest Service housing is provided (a nominal housing fee applies)
Work area: Ouachita National Forest northwest of Hot Springs, AR
Stream Inventory Crew (3 - 6 positions):
Duration: May 23rd - August 12th, 2011
Primary duties: measure stream habitat attributes and sample fish in wadeable streams
Duty station: Blacksburg, Virginia
Housing: not provided but subleases are readily available in Blacksburg, VA
Work area: National Forests throughout the southeastern U.S.

Summer Fisheries Jobs Available
NC State University Research Technician Opportunity
Research Technician: NC State University is conducting projects focused on the conservation, captive propagation and life history of freshwater mussels. We anticipate having funds to hire one individual part-time (20 hrs a week) as a technician to assist with laboratory and field work. Work will hopefully begin between mid-March and early April 2011 and will last for 18 weeks.
Duties:
- Perform routine care for and maintenance of juvenile and adult freshwater mussels and stream fishes in a laboratory,
- Assist in the propagation and culture of freshwater mussels,
- Assist in performing field surveys and collection of freshwater mussels (snorkeling and wading)
- Assist in monitoring culture ponds in Butner and Asheboro, NC
- Assist in conducting some fish collection through seining and backpack electrofishing
- Monitor and maintain water quality in lab recirculating systems,
- Maintain data and records on fishes and mussels in the laboratory,
Necessary Qualifications:
- Must be working towards or have completed a Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in biology, fisheries and wildlife sciences, zoology or related field,
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail,
- Good data collection skills,
- Ability to work well alone as well as work closely with others,
- Physically fit and able to work long hours in and around water and under potentially adverse weather conditions,
- Must be able to climb ladders and carry up to 40 pounds,
- Must be able to swim, snorkel and be comfortable in water,
- A North Carolina driver’s license (or ability to obtain one).
Other Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the care of aquatic animals
- A background and interest in streams and aquatic biology
- Experience surveying freshwater fishes and/or mussels
- Experience paddling a canoe
- Experience with tools, plumbing, carpentry, etc.
Pay: $10/hr
Hours: somewhat flexible but primarily within regular business hours Monday - Friday

NORTH PACIFIC GROUNDFISH OBSERVER POSITIONS AVAILABLE YEAR-ROUND Currently recruiting for trainings that will begin in May, June, July, and August of 2010

AOI is the premier provider of Observers to the National Marine Fisheries Service North Pacific Groundfish Observer Program. As an at-sea biologist working aboard U.S..flagged commercial fishing vessels, you will gather data essential to the sustainability of fisheries resources in Alaska. Following a paid 3-week training in either Anchorage or Seattle, you will make 2 deployments in the course of 6 to 8 months, each approximately 2 ~ months in length. Observers live and work aboard commercial fishing vessels operating in the Bering Sea and the North Pacific Ocean, identifying fish species, sampling catches to determine their species composition, making estimates of total catch, and collecting age structures and biological data from target species. Observers are guaranteed subsequent deployment opportunities and salary advances.
COMPENSATION: $3,900.00-$6,340.00 per month, depending on experience, plus room, board, and travel to and from job site.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in fisheries biology, marine biology, general biology, zoology, or a related natural science.
