Programming Interns
 To be considered for this opportunity, you should be pursuing a Computer Science or MIS degree and have successfully completed several programming classes. Prior hands-on internship experience in a corporate environment is a plus.
Quality Assurance Interns
 To be considered for this opportunity, you should be pursuing a Computer Science, Information Technology degree or a Business degree with a focus in technology. Exposure in either accounting, human resources or finance is a plus. This person should be detail-oriented, analytical and thorough with good written and communication skills. You must be fluent in all aspects of MS Office and have experience with web/intranet creation tools.
Technical Writer/Documentation Interns
 To be considered for this opportunity, you should be pursuing a Technical Communication, Professional Writing, or a degree in a related field. You should be comfortable working with computers (word processing, graphics, and desktop publishing software), have successfully completed several technical writing classes and at least one computer programming class (any programming language). This internship is not a fit for a student who mainly enjoys creative writing (such as poetry or fiction), journalism, or types of technical writing other than software documentation (such as proposal writing or medical/scientific writing).
Prior hands-on or internship experience in a corporate environment and development experience is a plus. American Cancer Society Internship

Patricia Sanderson Memorial College Internship Program

Summary

Patricia Sanderson of Rockford, Illinois was a distinguished, 35-year Illinois Division volunteer. Her contributions and leadership enabled the Society to realize remarkable achievements, particularly in the communications and advocacy arena.

In Mrs. Sanderson’s memory, the officers of the Illinois Division Board of Directors have established the Patricia Sanderson Memorial Internship Program as a tribute to her commitment to solidifying the brand presence and public affairs activities of the American Cancer Society in Illinois. Through this internship program, now in its third year, a deserving undergraduate college student will be selected to assist the Society in accomplishing its communications and advocacy goals in Illinois, while enabling the student to gain meaningful workplace experiences that will assist high-potential professionals in their related fields of study and career pursuits.

Internship

Students will work aside key staff in the Division Headquarters office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, for a 10-week period in the summer to provide public relations and marketing communications support for the Illinois Division. The intern will formally report to the Director of Public Relations. Wherever possible, his/her support will target key advocacy initiatives. Among the tasks to be included in this assignment:

  • Preparation of press materials and pitching the news media on behalf of the Society
  • Monitoring and measurement of how the Society is portrayed in the media
  • Development of other key communications materials, such as brochures, key messaging and speeches, that assist the communications and advocacy functions
  • Public relations planning and execution of key communications initiatives, including the Research Student Intern Program and mission/mission outreach activities
  • Communications outreach tied to key advocacy priorities, including access to health care
  • Collaborating with volunteers who assist in our outreach and as spokespersons

Eligibility

Undergraduate college students must meet the following application criteria:

  • Either attend an Illinois-based school or be an Illinois resident
  • Have completed their sophomore year of college
  • Have a minimum of a B average (cumulative 3.0 on 4.0 scale)
  • Plan to continue their education in the following term/semester
  • Are pursuing a degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public affairs or a related field and have related aptitudes

Application Process

The Illinois Division will begin to accept applicants for this internship opportunity in January 2010. Applicants are required to provide in full a completed application portfolio that includes the following five documents:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • 500-word essay summarizing their career interests and intentions within the communications/advocacy arena
  • Two written references from academic/professional sources addressing the student’s credentials based on the internship’s skill requirements (noted above)
  • Students chosen for finalist interviews will be asked to provide an official transcript attesting to their GPA and favorable standing as a full-time student

Applicants also will be required to complete a standard internship application form and comply with all ACS standard pre-employment screening procedures including a criminal background investigation.

Compensation

The intern will be paid at the rate of $12 per hour, and in accordance with the Division’s standard payroll processing schedule. The intern’s employment status will be designated as nonexempt, limited/temporary, and non benefits-eligible. The intern’s typical work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but may vary based on business need and Division headquarters operating schedules. The intern will not be eligible for holiday pay.

ACS Policies

The intern will be subject to ACS Employment, Finance and other policies and procedures, as applicable for their position, and will be required to sign an Employee Handbook acknowledgement. The intern may be eligible for mileage reimbursement, subject to Division Finance policy. The intern will be an employee “at-will,” which means that the Society may terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH THE U.S. SENATE

George Voinovich is the senior United States Senator from the state of Ohio and a member of the Republican Party. Previously, he served as the Governor of Ohio from 1991-1998, and as the mayor of Cleveland from 1980-1989. He currently serves on the Environment and Public Works committee, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, and the Foreign Relations committee. The Senator’s office in Cincinnati aids the Senator in being a helpful federal partner to those individuals who are mired in bureaucratic red tape, by listening to the concerns of constituents, communicating they directly back to the Senator, and helping address those concerns on the local level.

Job Description:
Schedule:
 Interns will be asked to work one to two days per week, three to four hours at a time.
 Sessions
o Session 1 – Spring (January, February, March, April)
o Session 2 – Summer (June, July, August)
o Session 3 – Fall (September, October, November, December)
 Beginning and ending dates of the internships are flexible and will be adjusted, if necessary. For example, students whose classes end early in the year may begin their internship in the middle of May, instead of the beginning of June. All such scheduling requests must be presented along with the application.
Responsibilities:
 Regular administrative tasks, such as answering telephones, opening and distributing mail, drafting letters, and updating contact lists
 Using problem solving skills to assist constituents
 Helping the staff keep the Senator connected with the local community
Benefits:
 This is an unpaid internship; however, students are encouraged to seek credit from their college or university. By the end of the internship, interns will also gain excellent insight into the workings of a Senate office and how the legislative process works.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for coordinating communications and logistics for the first annual Dancing with Celebrities of Clark County fundraising event. The intern will work 10-12 hours per week from January through April of 2009.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITES
Reports at least weekly to the Projects Director on event timelines and outcomes including completed tasks, barriers and communications with partners.
Desired outcomes of Project:
a. Learning Outcomes for Student:
 Gain foundational understanding of nonprofit fund-raising and event planning
 Enhance relational communication through expanded business relationships
 Develop skills in community wide promotions and public relations
 Utilize written communication skills (press releases, journalism, email correspondence)

 Stay abreast of deadlines and ensure that all logistical aspects related to the event are covered.

 Assist with design of programs, press releases, website, banners, etc.
 Interface with vendors and complete ordering and pickup of materials when needed.
 Recruit additional support (volunteers) from Wittenberg student body if needed to assist with the event.

EDUCATION
• Actively enrolled in a 4 year undergraduate program related to communications, sociology, psychology or journalism
EXPERIENCE
• Some experience with project supervision, coordination and intra organizational communications.

Desired Qualications:

Apply for the Center for Civic and Urban Engagement Summer Program!

Engaging in the Center’s Summer Internship program will give you the potential to affect positive social, economic, cultural and environmental change right here in Springfield, Ohio. Despite the current challenges facing Springfield, the future looks very promising. As a Center for Civic and Urban Engagement intern, you will be part of re-establishing Springfield as a city of promise, a place that anyone would be proud to call their home. The projects you will undertake will immerse you in Springfield and allow you to interact with a broad cross section of the community including business, government and community leaders, non-profit agencies, and individual residents. Descriptions of the projects for this summer can be found in the attached application document.

The 2010 Center for Civic and Urban Engagement Summer Internship Program will run from June 7th – July 30th. Selected students will have the opportunity to earn up to $2400.00 – OR – 4 Hours of academic credit + an opportunity to earn an additional $500.00. All interns will be provided campus housing at no cost. During the course of this internship, you will have the opportunity to develop creative solutions to major challenges facing the Greater Springfield community. As Wittenberg students, you are able to lend unique expertise, creativity and energy to the development of collaborative efforts addressing specific community needs. This internship will provide you with the chance to test the knowledge you have gained and the skills and abilities you have strengthened during your time spent at Wittenberg.
