Job Description
Galveston Historical Foundation serves as the steward and operator of many of Galveston's most significant historic sites; The 1838 Michel Menard House, 1839 Samuel May Williams House, 1859 Ashton Villa, 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA and Texas Seaport Museum, 1892 Bishop’s Palace, and the 1861 Custom House. Job Responsibilities
· Care for collections and related documentation (paper and computer), including accessioning materials, conducting workshops, cleaning. Responsible for monitoring of condition of all objects in collections; proper storage of all objects in collections; repair and necessary conservation of collections.
· Training of volunteers in the care of collections and oversight of volunteer work on collections.
· Research, write and assist with installation of exhibits at Bishop’s Palace, Texas Seaport Museum, Custom House and St. Joseph’s Church. Work with Director and other personnel (contract and volunteer) on special exhibits. Research and implementation of changing interpretive themes in house museums and church,
· Research and write interpretive material for docents at all properties.
· Respond to collections-related questions from public.
· Collections management, interpretation and development of a historical object collection, archives and related exhibit objects.
Requirements
• Ability to work independently, give attention to detail, organize efficiently, and work with people.
• Strong MS Word skills, familiarity with Excel, familiarity with PastPerfect.
• Strong writing and communication proficiency
• Education: Art history, museum/curatorial studies, interest in history and historic preservation preferred, master’s degree preferred.
• Record of exhibition organization and knowledge of museums practices, preferred.
