Computer History Museum Internships

The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA is currently accepting applications for internships, including:

  • Museum Registration Intern, with emphasis on processing new acquisitions
  • Document Archives Intern, with emphasis on processing text
  • Software Archives Intern, with emphasis on processing software of all formats

CHM offers a stipend of $1,000 over 3 months for 12 hours/week worked or $1,500 over 3 months for 18 hours/week worked. Interested individuals must be recent graduates of or currently enrolled as graduate students in either Library and Information Sciences or Museum Studies programs. Two internships at Natchez National Historical Park in Natchez, Mississippi

Position: Museum Technician Internship
Duration: 10 weeks/400 hours
Salary: A stipend of $12.00/hour or $4800 for the 10 week internship. Income taxes are not withheld. Interns will be responsible for reporting income to the IRS.

Schedule: Beginning June 7 and ending August 13, 2010; Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Requests to change starting and ending dates may be considered.

Job Summary: Intern will assist curatorial staff with the care, maintenance, and preservation of the museum collection and historic buildings. Intern will implement museum maintenance and housekeeping duties of exhibit and storage areas; perform technical and delicate cleaning of objects that require special treatment and handling, such as: glass, metals, ceramics, textiles, books, photographs, and furniture; prepare, maintain, and organize manual and automated curatorial records which include catalog records and inventories using the Interior Collection Management System (ICMS); perform environmental monitoring of the collection; provide information to park staff and visitors; carry out assignments and follow directions according to NPS policy and procedures. Intern will be involved with special projects that require working in historic structures, some of which are not climate controlled.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess education in museum studies, art history, history, or material culture. Applicants must have experience in using a variety of computer software, and the ability to present oral and written information in a clear and concise manner to complete cataloging and collection documentation. A valid drivers license is required for this position. When selected, applicant must complete and pass a background check. Housing will not be provided.

Area Information: Natchez National Historical Park is located in southwest Mississippi in the city of Natchez , which is situated on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River . The park is made up of three sites: Melrose, an 80-acre estate with original dependency buildings; William Johnson House, the furnished home of a free African American man prior to the Civil War, and Fort Rosalie, property where the original 1716 French fort once stood. The park museum collection consists of a range of objects that includes 19th century decorative arts, tools, architectural, and archival materials. The collection consists of twenty years of scrapbooks currently housed in non-archival material. Work includes handling fragile archival material and migrating the collection to proper storage material. 2010 Summer Internships at The Gaston County Museum

Exhibits/Collections Intern (1 position available)

Summer/Fall 2010 (30 to 40 hours per week)

HOUSING PROVIDED

The Gaston County Museum is currently seeking one collections/exhibits intern for summer/fall 2010. This position will either focus on archives and be responsible for inventorying, cataloging and processing the collection, or they will work with the permanent collection accessioning and photographing objects. The intern will also assist the Curatorial Staff in exhibit design and installation. The intern will also work under the guidance of the Curatorial Staff to update and maintain permanent exhibits and interpreted spaces.

The successful candidates will be detail oriented, organized, and able to work independently. Must be able to work with and meet deadlines, lift up to 30 pounds, and climb stairs and ladders. Preference will be given to candidates with previous museum work or course experience and/or candidates wishing to pursue a career in museums. Knowledge of PastPerfect collections database a plus.

The internship is unpaid, but housing that is within walking distance to the museum is provided. The internship will begin in the summer or fall (depending on intern’s schedule), end in December, and be 30 to 40 hours per week during that time. Deadline for application is April, 2009.

The Gaston County Museum is currently seeking a summer intern to work in the Education Department. This person will work closely with the Programs Coordinator to learn program methods and strategies. The intern will be responsible for development, implementation, and evaluation of museum programs & outreach programs. The intern will also work on other projects at the museum and in the community as assigned.

The successful candidate will be detail oriented, organized, and able to work independently. Must be able to work with and meet deadlines, lift up to 30 pounds, and climb stairs and ladders. Preference will be given to candidates with previous museum work or course experience and/or candidates wishing to pursue a career in museums. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs is preferred.
