COMPANY Within our National Security Global Business (NSGB) Product Line, our Rail Safety Group is looking for senior Rail Safety Engineers to participate in multifaceted safety assessments of electronic and software based systems used in rail transportation applications.
JOB DESCRIPTION The candidate for this position can be located in Columbus, Ohio, Rochester, New York, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Washington, and Aberdeen, Maryland. They will be working with Battelle’s Rail Safety staff, the successful candidate will use their solid background in engineering, design and safety principles to generate various reports and safety-related analysis tasks (e.g. hazard analysis) associated with rail equipment being supplied to the North American and International rail transportation industries. On-the-job training in the global safety discipline and preparation of proposals will be provided to the candidate as required to accomplish project tasks.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Participate, with the members of the Rail Safety Group, in the proposal, project management and technical analysis associated with traditional Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) activities including but not limited to:Safety PlanningIndependent Safety AssessmentHazard Analyses and Hazard LogWorst Case and Product Failure Analysis (FMEA) Risk Assessments Various Safety Reports and Safety Case Documentation for products or systems required by rail agencies, rail equipment suppliers, and in adherence to regulatory agencies such as the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:· Bachelor/Master’s of Science Degree in Electronic / Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or other similar engineering discipline.· Experience in electronic and microprocessor based product or system design for companies associated with highly reliable or safety critical activities.· Ability to execute analyses, design reviews and evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles, adhering to business standards & procedures in accordance with product/ program requirements.· Self starter, able to work independently with a sense of urgency and network effectively to gather data from different sources in a team environment Experience in Design for Quality, Safety and/or Reliability, Availability, Maintainability (RAM).· Effective writing of technical reports and input to proposals.
THE FOLLOWING IS PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:· Experience in business development activities, preparation and formal presentation to clients.· Experience in managing the full proposal cycle – identifying lead for an opportunity to working with Contracts in issuing a final proposal to a client.· Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral. This includes providing a writing sample (if selected for an interview) such as a thesis, research/technical report or other evidence of writing capability.· Self starter, able to work independently with a sense of urgency and network effectively to gather data from different sources in a team environment.· Must be a detail-oriented individual, thoughtful and deliberate in your approach to conducting research and analyses.· Be an effective listener and contributor at client meetings. Demonstrated ability to document the pertinent information/action items/opportunities discussed in a client meeting and provide a written summary of that material for management and senior technical staff. · Excellent Microsoft Office software skills (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; also skills in Project preferred).· Must possess a strong work ethic and be task focused. Must be willing to “do what it takes” to get the job done within the allotted timeframe while maintaining the highest levels of quality in the products produced.· Experience in Project Management a plus, including ability to work with Microsoft Project. Formal project management training (i.e., coursework, continuing education, CAPM or PMP certifications) a plus.· Demonstrated experience conducting research for USDOT a plus.

Our National Security Division is currently seeking a Electrical Engineer. This position is located in Columbus, Ohio.
The Electrical Engineer's responsibilities include the following:
- Designing electronic and electro-mechanical equipment to meet the needs of a large variety of clients including the armed services or other Department of Defense organizations.
- Conceptualization, requirements definition, fabrication, testing, field installation, troubleshooting and other activities related to delivery of reliable hardware for challenging and diverse environments (i.e. underwater equipment, chemical/biological defense, avionics and electronics systems, personal equipment, etc.).
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
- 0-3 years mechanical engineering experience
- Particular interest, experience or skills in Programmable Controllers
- Experience in computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, design and analysis
- Recent graduates will be considered if they can demonstrate aptitude in design and problem solving by experience such as college-level project or thesis work, co-op or intern employment, or previous work involving hands-on and design related work. All candidates should specify GPA within resume.
- US citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain government security clearances
- May require periodic travel.

Battelle's Medical Device Solutions group is seeking an Electrical Engineering Co-op in Columbus, Ohio for part-time regular work during Summer Semester/Quarter of 2012.
Job Duties:
- The selected candidate will participate in multi-discipline teams on medical product development projects.
- Supporting team members in conducting experiments, including data acquisition and analysis, assembly and fabrication of prototypes and equipment.
- Some additional facets of product development such as concept generation, design, prototyping and schematic capture may be possible pending project work load and candidates abilities.
- Sophomore standing or higher in an electrical or software engineering curriculum or related field and with coursework emphasizing product design.
- Minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
- Proven ability to successfully work independently or as part of a larger team.
- Applicants in an established Co-op program or those available for more than one work term will be given preference. This includes either consecutive work terms or a rotation of work - school- work
- Experience with embedded or application software development or analog or digital hardware design is a strong benefit
- Work experience designing product components and subsystems, familiarity with manufacturing processes and related design requirements and constraints.
- Experience with statistical analysis and/or Design of Experiments.
